Anish Kapoor at the Grand Palais in Paris 2011 |
There was a moment of blackness and disorientation when I stepped inside inside
Monumenta, a sculpture installation by Anish Kapoor at the Grand Palais. The air is warm and heavy and there is an eery reddish glow. It is sort of like a return to the womb, which is not surprising given that the work of sculptor Anish Kapoor often references the body and our deepest memories.

From the outside, but still within the confines of the Grand Palais, this enormous membrane takes on another countenance all together. Filling the cavernous spaces of the Grand Palais, I couldn't help but feel awe and wonder at the enormous scale of this bulbous sculpture which fills the entire 13,500 square metres of the interior.

Anish Kapoor said this about his creation "
My ambition is to create a space within the space that responds to the height and luminosity of the Nave at the Grand Palais." It was a singular ambition, rendered with awe-inducing grandeur.
