Q&A + Canadian Art Gallery Hop Tour on Saturday, September 22

loop Gallery is delighted to announce that we have been included on the Canadian Art 2012 Gallery Hop's tour of Dundas West galleries alongside Art Metropole, Cooper Cole, Jessica Brandley Inc, LE Gallery, and MKG 127. 

Join us on the weekend of Saturday, September 22 for the last remaining days of our two current exhibitions and a Q&A panel for Plus 2 by Linda Heffernan and False Fractions and Relations by Ester Pugliese. The Q&A will be from 3PM, followed by the Gallery Hop at 4:05PM.

loop Gallery is pleased to announce two exhibitions by loop members Linda Heffernan entitled Plus 2, and Ester Pugliese entitled False Relations and Fractions. 

Linda Heffernan, 'Plus 2' (2012)

Plus 2 continues Linda Heffernan's exploration of the potential ramifications of extreme climate change and the opposing points of view that make a considered global response so challenging. The textured semi-abstract paintings in this exhibit use satellite views of major cities and snippets of media commentary as a jumping off point to depict the consequences of choosing to explore or ignore the search for a green economy. 

Linda Heffernan is a Whitby-based artist exploring themes of consumer capitalism and bureaucracy in an ever more interconnected global economy. She has a BFA from OCAD University and her work is included in a number of private and public collections in Canada. Linda Heffernan is a member of loop Gallery and has exhibited her work in a number of galleries in Toronto 's Queen West district as well as Whitby's Station Gallery and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. 

Ester Pugliese, 'False Relations I' (2012)

The mixed media works in Pugliese’s False Relations and Fractions offer up an arrangement of incongruous image pairings and split second variations that layer cultural references, natural elements and imagined realities. Roofs of Toronto houses open up to reveal ephemeral hierarchies; output graphs from Ontario's wind power facilities intertwine with musical notation spectrograms of Italian madrigals; and groupings of fragile objects invite closer inspection. 

Pugliese is a Toronto-based artist who has exhibited her work in Canada and England. She holds a BFA from York University and received the Humber College Board of Governors Achievement Award with her post-graduate certificate in Arts Administration/Cultural Management in 2004. Her work is in private and public collections in North America and Europe, including the Donovan Collection at St. Michael’s College, Toronto.

Gallery Closed for Installation

loop Gallery is closed for installation this week and will reopen on Friday, October 22. Question and Answer Session with Elizabeth Babyn and Linda Heffernan

There will be a question and answer session with Elizabeth Babyn and Linda Heffernan moderated by Catherine Beaudette on Saturday, September 18th, 3 PM at loop.

Elizabeth Babyn’s current body of work, titled Illumination, derives its inspiration from a selection of under painted images depicting sacred geometry, sacred places and sacred architecture on raw canvas. With spontaneous large gestural brush strokes, she allows her intuition to direct her as she navigates her way through the canvas.

Linda Heffernan’s Inadvertent Intervention is a series of paintings that explores the aesthetic beauty in the potential ramifications of extreme climate change by imagining satellite views of Canfield oceans.

Catherine Beaudette was born in Montréal, Québec and currently divides her time between Toronto, Ontario and Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. Her practice stems from both places where she collects artifacts and specimens to form the basis of her drawings, paintings and installations. Catherine studied painting in Toronto and Florence, Italy and has exhibited her work in Canada since the mid '80’s. In 1998 she received an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Catherine is one of the founders of Loop Gallery. Catherine is an associate professor at The Ontario College of Art and Design.

Review of Linda Heffernan and Elizabeth Babyn on Artsync

Artsync features a review of Linda Heffernan and Elizabeth Babyn's work currently on display at Loop Gallery. Describing their paintings as "luminously layered and ethereal", the review of their show which "explores the theme of fragile and sacred places" can be read here.

A question and answer session with the artists and moderated by Catherine Beaudette will be held Saturday September 18th, at 3pm, the day before both shows end on the 19th.

With spontaneous large gestural brush strokes, she allows her intuition to direct her as she navigates her way through the canvas.

Babyn obtained her BFA with honors in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She paints and teaches at her Bolton studio, north of Toronto. She has been a Loop Gallery member since 2003 and has exhibited in Ferrara Italy, Propeller Gallery for the Visual Arts, Spin Gallery, Whitney Gallery, SGI, McMichael Gallery, Caledon East Studio Tour and various other venues in the surrounding area.

Linda Heffernan at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery

Loop Gallery Member Linda Heffernan is one of three Durham area artists selected by curator Sonya Jones to participate in a show called Transient Nature at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. The featured artists "explore the idea of impermanence in the transition of youth, in memory and possessions, in the transformation of objects and the land and our existence on Earth."

In the exhibition catalogue (cover image shown above), the curator Sonya Jones begins her essay with this quote from The Buddist Review:

"This existence of ours is as transient as Autumn clouds. To watch the birth and death of beings is like looking at the movements of a dance. A lifetime is a flash of lightning in the sky. Rushing by, like a torrent down a steep mountain."


Jones describes Heffernan's work as dealing with regret, "conferring a more negative undertone to human memory....Her paintings depict either solutions or predictions of how the Earth will potentially remember humanity....Heffernan feels that all will share a common regret: the memory of what was done, what was not done, and what could have been done to prevent climate change." 

Transient Nature continues at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery until August 29, 2010.
