loop Gallery is pleased to announce exhibitions by loop members Elizabeth Babyn entitled Sacred Connections and Sandra Smirle entitled Turvy.

Intrigued by Fibonacci’s number sequences, sacred geometry and our inter- connectedness with everything, Sacred Connections launches Elizabeth Babyn’s mixed media ‘Unity quilt’ with ‘truths’ contributed from the general public. The quilt is shown with depictions from sacred geometry and the natural environment, as well as a mixed media installation designed to receive truth offerings from gallery visitors to facilitate the ongoing growth of the ‘Unity Quilt.’

Elizabeth Babyn obtained her BFA in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She and her husband relocated from Caledon, Ontario to Saskatoon in the early spring of 2011. Babyn has participated in group and solo shows in Ferrara Italy, Toronto and the surrounding area, with galleries that include Propeller, Spin, loop, SGI, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. She has been a loop member since 2003.

Turvy continues Smirle’s exploration of geographies of otherness, translated from aerial maps into hand and laser cut drawings. These works explore a narrative at the intersection of light, shadow, time, and place with special attention to how navigation and data-capture technologies twist and ‘tirve’ our world view, and how we as viewers are equally subject to observation by others.

Sandra Smirle is a mixed media artist whose work explores how new technologies distort our view of the world, and how we in turn are viewed by these mechanisms designed to track our movements.Smirle’s work is included in private and corporate collections in Canada, Australia and Europe. Her work was selected for inclusion in The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography, published by Princeton Architectural Press. She is currently a MFA Candidate at Concordia University.

An Invitation to Participate from Elizabeth Babyn

For my next exhibit entitled Sacred Connections, I am formally inviting all of you to assist me in the creation of a mixed media unity quilt which I plan to launch the third week of June 2012 at Loop Gallery in Toronto. What I will require from you are those handwritten truths or guiding principles that assist you to reach your highest potential. It is my belief that handwritten excerpts will bring more energy to the work. These excerpts may be of any length, they may be written on paper or cloth or card stock and should those guiding principles already exist for you as quotes or bits of poetry from other sources that is fine too.

Elizabeth Babyn writes:
I recently relocated from Caledon, Ontario to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  After months of move preparations, I am so happy to finally be back at work painting in my new condo loft studio on 23rd and 2nd Street in Saskatoon!


Some of you may recall that my last Loop exhibit in September dealt with sacred geometry and sacred spaces; as a result of this prior investigation, I am looking forward to continuing where I left off.   However, as I develop these new works I will place more emphasis on Fibonacci numbers in nature.

Loop Gallery received a mention in today's Globe and Mail in the Arts section, page R15, in an article by Larry Humber called "No $100 Warhols, but there are bargains". This is what was written about Loop:

"The Loop Gallery, which recently relocated to Dundas West from Queen Street, is a cooperative with members each allotted a space. Works on the block include Martha Eleen's oil on wood titled Winner, priced at $900. Another member is cartoonish Gary Clement, whose watercolour Untitled/Air is $400".

Question and Answer Session with Elizabeth Babyn and Linda Heffernan

There will be a question and answer session with Elizabeth Babyn and Linda Heffernan moderated by Catherine Beaudette on Saturday, September 18th, 3 PM at loop.

Elizabeth Babyn’s current body of work, titled Illumination, derives its inspiration from a selection of under painted images depicting sacred geometry, sacred places and sacred architecture on raw canvas. With spontaneous large gestural brush strokes, she allows her intuition to direct her as she navigates her way through the canvas.

Linda Heffernan’s Inadvertent Intervention is a series of paintings that explores the aesthetic beauty in the potential ramifications of extreme climate change by imagining satellite views of Canfield oceans.

Catherine Beaudette was born in Montréal, Québec and currently divides her time between Toronto, Ontario and Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. Her practice stems from both places where she collects artifacts and specimens to form the basis of her drawings, paintings and installations. Catherine studied painting in Toronto and Florence, Italy and has exhibited her work in Canada since the mid '80’s. In 1998 she received an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Catherine is one of the founders of Loop Gallery. Catherine is an associate professor at The Ontario College of Art and Design.

Review of Linda Heffernan and Elizabeth Babyn on Artsync

Artsync features a review of Linda Heffernan and Elizabeth Babyn's work currently on display at Loop Gallery. Describing their paintings as "luminously layered and ethereal", the review of their show which "explores the theme of fragile and sacred places" can be read here.

A question and answer session with the artists and moderated by Catherine Beaudette will be held Saturday September 18th, at 3pm, the day before both shows end on the 19th.

Babyn obtained her BFA with honors in Drawing and Painting at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She paints and teaches at her Bolton studio, north of Toronto. She has been a Loop Gallery member since 2003 and has exhibited in Ferrara Italy, Propeller Gallery for the Visual Arts, Spin Gallery, Whitney Gallery, SGI, McMichael Gallery, Caledon East Studio Tour and various other venues in the surrounding area.

Linda Heffernan is a Whitby-based artist exploring themes of consumer capitalism and bureaucracy in an ever more interconnected global economy. She has a BFA from Ontario College of Art and Design. Linda is a member of Loop Gallery and has exhibited her work in a number of galleries in Toronto's Queen West district as well as Whitby's Station Gallery and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa.

Flower of Life by Elizabeth Babyn

Flower of Life and Seed of Life are two paintings from Elizabeth Babyn's Illumination series. These works were created for her upcoming show with Linda Heffernan at Loop Gallery which opens August 28th.  These paintings and other selected works by Elizabeth Babyn are currently on display at Dragonfly Gallery in Orangeville from March 31-April 28.
